Sports: Gulbis is surprise winner of 2011 Farmers Classic Tennis Event

The men’s professional tennis tournament hosted by UCLA each summer may not get the world’s greatest talent or the biggest crowds, but it is the only chance for fans to see world class tennis in the LA area. In spite of the less than stellar field, the fans that chose to check things out during the week of July 25-31, 2011 were rewarded with some great matches at the intimate venue. Sports: The LA Tennis Open

“I went to the ATP tennis event and nobody showed up.” That could have been what people said upon leaving the disappointing LA Tennis Open Presented by Farmers Insurance Group at UCLA (www.LATennisOpen.com) in late July. No top 10 players. Sparse crowds. Player defaults. Not exactly the showcase hoped for by the Southern California Tennis Association (http://www.scta.usta.com) and the Association of Tennis Professionals (http://www.atpworldtour.com), the organizers of the event.
