Sports: Pro Beach Volleyball returns in style at the Manhattan Beach Open
For the first time in 2011, it felt like the glory days of professional beach volleyball. The Manhattan Beach Open, the sport’s most prominent event in the United States, and maybe the world, took place before enthusiastic crowds on a beautiful, late August weekend. The United States Volleyball Association, with expert production from IMG Action Sports, and flagship sponsorship from Jose Cuervo, put on a successful, fun, and exciting tournament. Read More »

The men’s professional tennis tournament hosted by UCLA each summer may not get the world’s greatest talent or the biggest crowds, but it is the only chance for fans to see world class tennis in the LA area. In spite of the less than stellar field, the fans that chose to check things out during the week of July 25-31, 2011 were rewarded with some great matches at the intimate venue. Sports: Farmers Classic Tennis Stars Under the Stars
The 2010 LA Tennis Open at UCLA had a new title sponsor in Farmers Insurance and, in addition to some exciting tennis, brought fun back to the event. Last year, with some financial struggles, the event eliminated the celebrity and pro charity exhibition that usually opens the tournament. This year’s special evening, the Farmers Classic "Stars Under the Stars," saw the return of some legendary tennis talent and a couple of celebs who take their tennis quite seriously. The Andre Agassi Foundation for Education (www.agassifoundation.org/) was the beneficiary of the exhibition. Read More »

Vehicles: 2010 Fords – Performance and Innovation
Being the lone American carmaker not in dire financial trouble should be a significant competitive advantage for Ford (www.ford.com). However, they still have to deliver attractive cars to a demanding public that can choose from a multitude of multinational options. The newest Ford models offer an attractive combination of styling, technology, safety, and fuel economy. I test drove some of their premium models and came away impressed. Read More »
Sports: The LA Tennis Open
“I went to the ATP tennis event and nobody showed up.” That could have been what people said upon leaving the disappointing LA Tennis Open Presented by Farmers Insurance Group at UCLA (www.LATennisOpen.com) in late July. No top 10 players. Sparse crowds. Player defaults. Not exactly the showcase hoped for by the Southern California Tennis Association (http://www.scta.usta.com) and the Association of Tennis Professionals (http://www.atpworldtour.com), the organizers of the event. However, there was good news amid the bad. The setting was beautiful, the weather was great, and it was a rare opportunity to see some local, and not so local, pros compete in southern California. Vehicles: Mazda's "Zoom-Zoom" Lives On with a New Crop of Happy Cars
The people at Mazda must be a fun group to work with. They keep building cars that make driving an almost childlike experience. More than just transportation, the new Mazdas practically scream, “Take me for a ride, I want to go out and play!” I had the opportunity to test drive four of the new Mazda vehicles that will surely put a happy smile on the face of most drivers, not unlike their newly redesigned front ends, like on the grinning 2009 Mazda6 shown above.
