Golf: The Phoenician, Scottsdale
If high-end luxury accommodations and close-by shopping are key elements to your idea of a great golfing getaway, then head for the Phoenician. Situated at the base of Camelback Mountain in the heart of Scottsdale, this AAA 5-Diamond resort truly has it all.
Choose their fabulous Canyon Suites, a separate boutique hotel within the resort, where beautifully appointed suites feature flat-screen televisions, spacious rooms, balconies with expansive views of the private pool, cabanas, and mountain beyond, and even an “Ambassador” dedicated to serving your every need. Once you and your loved ones (including your dog, as the resort is very dog friendly) have settled in, then it’s time to hit the links.

The Phoenician course boasts 27 holes, grouped into three 9-hole segments known as the Desert, Canyon, and Oasis courses. Each has its own unique look and play. The Oasis shows the influence of designer Homer Flint, with a tropical feel and water features abounding, while the Desert, which was recently re-designed by Ted Robinson, Sr., is just as it sounds, filled with mesquite, cactus, sage, and plenty of sand bunkers. That course really feels the influence of the mountain, as its large greens slope away from its base. The Canyon course (with holes designed by both men) offers fantastic views of the town below, as well as the whole Valley of the Sun.

Before tackling any or all of the three courses, don’t miss the opportunity to tune up your game with Michael Lamanna, the resort’s Director of Golf Instruction. With his high-tech arsenal of video cameras, computer, and comparison-with-the-pros software, he’ll shoot your swing and then help you analyze it – and correct it for the better – right on the driving range. Lamanna isn’t averse to using lo-tech items in his instruction, either; his 7 iron with a long dowel stuck in its handle is an excellent tool for learning to keep your swing in the right arc.
Once on the course, simply soak up the warm Arizona sun, relax, and model the techniques that you’ve just learned. You’ll be amazed at how the visualization of your swing compared to a pro’s will help you to execute shots with a much more crisp and straight trajectory; who knew golf could be so simple? Don’t be lulled into complacency, however. The greens at the Phoenician are devilish, and sure to challenge your short game. Par on any combination of 18 holes is 71 here, and not an easy feat to accomplish, no matter what your handicap. For more information on this Scottsdale landmark, go to www.thephoenician.com.
