Golf: The Boulders Resort, Scottsdale
For a true desert golfing experience, complete with coyotes, mountain lions, rattlesnakes, and rabbits, plan a golf getaway that includes The Boulders Resort. Head to the Scottsdale/Phoenix area, where critters roam free across the sere Sonoran desert landscapes.
The legendary resort called The Boulders is an incredible place in the north end of Scottsdale’s civilized areas that has held a top AAA 5-Diamond citation for 20 years. Giant boulders mark the spot, incredible things, really, looming up around you as you wander the resort and the course, which is woven in among the luxurious casitas that dot the landscape. Looking up at those giants, it is hard to understand how they have not shifted and crushed whatever lies below, but there it is, they have not. Amazing.

The resort offers two terrific and demanding golf courses designed by Jay Morrish, known as North and South. The South course is embedded right into the hillsides where the lovely casitas perch; each casita is a homey Southwestern hideaway, with fireplace, leather chairs, and large comfy beds. The place is so sprawling that the staff is at the ready to ride you around in golf carts, down to the golf clubhouse, the pool, or the Golden Door Spa that sits near the main entrance of the secluded property.
This is a golf course renowned for its friendly attitude toward women; they even offer a “Ladies First” weekend golf getaway for gals only, with instruction from Wendy Hudler, the course pro. If improving your game is your goal, make sure to book a private lesson with her. She will tweak your swing, stance, and general understanding of the game in just an hour.

Once you’ve played these top-ranked courses, where lush fairways and greens exist alongside saguaro cacti, tumbleweeds, and sand, make sure to book a reservation for dinner into Latilla, where exemplary meals are the norm. The restaurant’s wine list is wonderful, and they really know how to pair the right tastes together for a memorable meal.
