DVD: Friday the 13th, Part VI: Jason Lives

Tommy Jarvis is still being haunted by the hockey mask killer Jason Vorhees in “Friday the 13th, Part VI: Jason Lives,” yet another installment in the long-running movie horror franchise. This time, the older Tommy is played by Thom Mathews, not cute Corey Feldman as he was two movies ago. The second Tommy, John Shepherd (who was in “Part V”), became a Fundamentalist Christian in the interim and decided not to reprise his role in the violent series.

This time out, Tommy is convinced that Jason is still alive and he talks a friend into going to the graveyard (at night and in a storm, of course), to dig up the grave to make sure that the serial killer is in fact dead. Through some overly preposterous mishaps, a lightning bolt hits a metal rod that is stuck in Jason's body and somehow re-animates him back to life. And, so, his hunt for Tommy resumes again.

Tommy is sure he has killed Jason a few times. He is haunted by the fact that maybe Jason isn't dead and has somehow been resurrected. Guess what, he's right!

Jason the slasher attacks victims yet again in the new DVD "Friday the 13th, Part VI: Jason Lives."

In the DVD extras, director Tom McLoughlin shows off a few of the props that he took from the set, including Jason's tombstone (which sits in his yard), and a casket. The extras include some slashed scenes, the original trailer shown in theaters, a commentary by the director and some of the cast, a documentary called "Meeting Mr. Vorhees," and two other mini-docs called "Lost Tales from Camp Blood" and "The Crystal Lake Massacres Revisited."

This was one of the most reviled and least successful of the Jason movies. In fact, it was the first of the "Friday the 13th" movies not to break $20 million.

Two notable cameos are in this version of the slasher franchise. Ron Pallilo, who was Arnold Horshack in the "Welcome Back Kotter" TV series portrays one of the pitiful victims long after he had his day in the sunshine. Then, there's Tony Goldwyn, who will, four years later, play the bad guy in "Ghost."
