AVA MD: The Place for Skin Rejuvination

When it comes to skin beauty, we all want to get it, keep it, and have it forever.

Sometimes that seems like an impossible dream, but if Dr. Ava Shamban has her way, every person she encounters in her burgeoning dermatology and skincare practice will come away with gorgeous (and younger-looking) skin.

“I have always believed that beautiful skin is possible at any age,” Dr. Shamban explains from her AVA MD MediSpa, located in the heart of Beverly Hills on Little Santa Monica. It is a sleek, modern space designed to provide both medical skin care as well as full skin spa services (very different than her straight medical practice in Santa Monica) that will get anyone red-carpet ready – or simply ready to happily face every day.

Dr. Ava, who made her name as the dermatological specialist for “Extreme Makover” and cemented her celebrity MD status with appearances on “Oprah” and the “Tyra Banks Show,” has filled her MediSpa with state-of-the-art devices (smoothbeam laser, Vasculight, ClearTouch Acne, TheraCool thermage, etc.) that she uses in conjunction with chemical peels, deep-cleansing facials, and other topical treatments to get impressive results.

“I believe it takes a combination of things, not, say, five Fotofacial sessions, to truly effect change in the skin,” she says. At Ava MD, each patient receives an initial consultation that identifies that person’s key skin issues – i.e., acne, acne scars, sun damage, rosacea, aging skin – and a treatment plan is developed. As the doctor cautions, however, do not expect miracles overnight.

“It usually takes four to six weeks for results to really show,” the extremely attractive and smooth-skinned fiftysomething doc says.

Shamban and her staff also offer all the usual skin spa treatments, including Botox injections, Restylane, Juvederm, and Collagen fillers, laser hair removal, waxing, and a whole assortment of facials and peels, each targeted to a specific problem/goal. On my visit, aesthetician Melanie Tan did a comprehensive facial with a glycolic peel, extractions, and clarifying mask that left my usually oily skin looking super clean and moisturized, without any redness or irritation, an impressive feat.

As Dr. Shamban points out, visiting a place that uses medically proven practices to help make you look on the outside the way you feel inside (younger, of course) makes perfect sense.

“I think that it is a wonderful thing, as long as what you do is natural looking. Not trying to be someone who wants to look like their teenage daughter; that is very unattractive, I think. But if your skin looks great, that’s the biggest part of it. The rest, all most people want is a little softening of their faces. And that can be done so nicely, just a bit of recontouring of the face, not going crazy.”
